Our case against the UK government will be heard because people like you pledged over £5,000 in the autumn last year towards the cost cap determined by the court. Without these contributions, the Western Sahara Campaign would not have been permitted to proceed with its case against the UK government that granting trade preferences for goods taken from the Western Sahara without the permission of the people of the territory is illegal.
But now, we need your help once more. Our case will be heard in the middle of May this year.
The court has capped our potential costs at £22,000, a huge sum for a small organisation. On top of that, we are faced with court fees and costs for translation work amounting to around £4,000.
We have relied on donations since we first began our struggle on behalf of the Saharawi people. Now, as we see the fruits of so much hard work over the past years, we must rely on an increase in those donations to help us succeed in this struggle.
Things are difficult right now for so many of us and so many across the world. But the Saharawis must not be forgotten when they have endured so much for so long. Your support could make all the difference.
Our case is strong and it is being watched by the people of Western Sahara. This week, Saharawi civil rights organisations, operating under Moroccan military occupation, issued a message of support for our case.
They say: “We call on all people of goodwill to join us in backing WSC UK’s legal action against the UK government.”
They insist “the permission of our people under occupation and in exile has been neither sought by nor granted to the UK government. The exploitation of these resources only serves the interests of the Moroccan occupation and to grant trade preferences to goods produced under occupation makes the UK complicit in our suffering.”
