UNSG Ban Ki-moon visited the Saharawi refugee camps and the Liberated Territories at the beginning of March. In his subsequent statement he described being moved and saddened by the situation of the Saharawi, a situation he called “unacceptable”.

The UNSG reaffirmed commitment to provide self-determination for the people of Western Sahara, offered assurances that the United Nations will do much more for the Saharawi, committing to “spare no effort” to resolve the situation.

John Gurr of the Western Sahara Campaign said:  We are pleased that the UN Secretary General has recognised the deplorable situation of the Saharawi and committed to action to resolve the conflict. Now he must deliver on this commitment and ensure a date is set for the long-awaited referendum to take place.
